I've been looking for pictures of these to do a post about them, but I can never find good rights-free ones!

It's used to put sea planes in the water.

Edit: I knew without looking at the link. In fact, the last picture in the link is where I first saw one. Renton Municipal Airport in Renton, WA.

I was down there on my birthday a few years ago just for grins, and that exact plane was brought down by the pilot who then allowed me inside the fence to watch the banner towing plane snag a banner to fly over SafeCo.

Balance. Also, imagine trying to back an airplane down a boat ramp. It's MUCH easier to "push" one, so they made these setups.

interesting use of four wheel drive.

Well that all makes sense for pushing. But why not build the ramp on the front? Why cut off the back wheels? I don't know if they use these on lakes/rivers/ocean waters, but in tidal water with a current it's great to have the ability to 4x4 it out of the water if your tires start to slip. I've never seen one in use though, so for all I know they don't have to get that far into the water.

Just seems like it would have been easier to hook the front thing on and leave the back half of the truck alone.

I mean it's certainly a cool kind of weird but...

Next time I get a chance to get down there, I'll try and take a video. Renton Municipal is on Lake Washington and is the airport where 737s are born.

OK well I see the truck wheels never have to touch the water so thats cool, that part is out of the question then.

It just really seems like it was a lot of work to turn it into a nice clean half truck when they could have just left it alone and hooked on the front trailer with zero modification.

Like I said before it's a cool kind of weird, just seems like a lot of work/effort for zero gain

If they had attached the front part to the truck, and left the back alone, then the only steering wheels would have been the center set of wheels. Depending on where the weight was at the time, the truck would turn differently. I think they made it so it would be more predictable.
